How to Drink and Prepare Perfect Mate

by Gustavo Calderon on Feb 28, 2022
De quoi ai-je besoin pour boire un maté et comment le préparer ? - El Gaucho une vraie tradition

Mate, this traditional South American drink, is much more than just an infusion; it is a symbol of conviviality and sharing. If you are curious to discover how to prepare and enjoy a mate, here is what you need and how to do it step by step.

The Necessary Elements:

  • Mate: This is the special gourd in which mate is served. It can be made of different materials, such as calabash (traditional), glass, metal or wood.
  • The Bombilla: A metal straw with a filter at the end, designed to filter yerba and allow the drink to be sipped.
  • Yerba Mate: The dried leaves of the Ilex paraguariensis tree, which are ground and prepared especially for this infusion.
  • Hot Water: The water should not boil, a temperature between 70 and 80°C is ideal.
  • A Thermos: To keep water at the ideal temperature throughout consumption.

Preparation of Traditional Mate:

  1. Heat the Water: Start by heating the water until it reaches the ideal temperature. Avoid letting it boil to preserve the qualities of the yerba.
  2. Fill the Mate: Fill 3/4 of the mate with yerba mate. This proportion is crucial to achieve the perfect balance between intensity and flavor.
  3. Prepare the Yerba: Cover the opening of the mate with your hand, turn it over and shake gently. This step mixes the leaves and places the finest ones towards the filter, thus avoiding clogging the bombilla.
  4. Moisten the Yerba: Tilt the mate about 45 degrees and gently pour warm water over the less-filled side to slightly moisten the yerba. This helps activate the flavors and aromas.
  5. Insert the Bombilla: While maintaining the tilt, insert the bombilla against the inner wall of the mate. Make sure it is well fixed and avoid moving it afterwards.
  6. Add Hot Water: Pour hot water slowly down the side of the bombilla until the surface is covered with foam. This marks the beginning of your mate experience.

The mate ritual is a moment of sharing and conviviality. Whether you enjoy it alone while reflecting or share it with friends, each sip invites you to a rich and authentic cultural experience. Welcome to the world of mate!
