Tea or Mate: What are the advantages and disadvantages of these energy drinks?

by Gustavo Calderon on Oct 04, 2024
Thé ou Maté : Quels sont les avantages et inconvénients de ces boissons énergisantes ?

Tea and mate are two of the most consumed beverages in the world, each with unique characteristics that attract millions of people every day. Although both share health benefits, there are fundamental differences between them. What to choose between tea and mate? Discover their pros and cons to help you make your choice.

1. Origin and Plants Used

Tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, which is native to Asia, while mate comes from the Ilex paraguariensis , a tree grown in South America. Tea has been consumed for over 5,000 years, particularly in China and Japan, and is part of Asian culture. Mate, on the other hand, is traditionally consumed in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, where it is known for its energetic properties.

2. Caffeine Content

One of the main differences between these two drinks is their caffeine content. Mate generally contains more caffeine than tea, which gives it a more pronounced energizing effect. A cup of mate provides a stronger stimulation than a cup of green tea, which contains less caffeine. However, the stimulation from mate is milder and more prolonged than that of coffee, allowing one to remain alert without feeling jittery.

3. Nutritional Benefits

Both drinks are rich in antioxidants. Tea is a major source of catechins , especially green tea, which helps reduce free radicals in the body and protect cells. Mate is rich in polyphenols , as well as vitamins (A, B, C, E) and minerals (potassium, magnesium, zinc). It is also known for its diuretic and digestive properties.

4. Effects on Digestion and Metabolism

Tea, especially green tea, is known to improve digestion and promote weight loss by regulating fat absorption. Mate, on the other hand, increases the feeling of satiety and stimulates fat metabolism, making it an excellent ally for those looking to control their weight.

5. Preparation and Taste

The process of preparing the two drinks also differs. Tea is usually brewed in hot water, and the taste varies depending on the variety (green, black, white, oolong). Mate , traditionally, is consumed in a gourd with a bombilla, a filtering straw, and has a more earthy and bitter taste. While some teas are sweeter and fruitier, mate is more intense, although flavored versions can be found to soften its taste.

6. Advantages and Disadvantages

Tea :

  • Benefits : Low in caffeine (especially green teas), high in antioxidants, wide variety of flavors, aids digestion.
  • Disadvantages : Excessive consumption can limit iron absorption and cause tooth staining.

Mate :

  • Benefits : Rich in caffeine for a long-lasting energizing effect, digestive properties, improves concentration, rich in vitamins and minerals.
  • Disadvantages : Bitter taste that not everyone likes, risk of nervousness in case of overconsumption.

Conclusion: What Choice to Make?

The choice between tea and mate will depend on your personal needs and preferences. If you are looking for a drink with a wide variety of flavors and milder effects, tea might be your best choice. On the other hand, if you need a more sustained dose of energy throughout the day, mate might be right for you. Why not enjoy the benefits of both drinks, depending on the time of day?
