Wooden Mates : Varieties, Cleaning and Maintenance

Wooden mates are a popular choice for mate lovers looking for a unique and authentic experience. Made from a variety of wood species, these mates combine natural beauty with durability. Here’s a guide to familiarize yourself with the different types of wood used, as well as detailed instructions on how to clean and care for your wooden mate.

Types of Wood Used

  1. Algarrobo Wood (Carob Tree) : Known for its strength and unique appearance, Algarrobo wood is often used to make durable mates that hold up well to everyday use.
  2. Palo Santo Wood : This sacred wood is prized for its pleasant aroma and natural antimicrobial properties. Palo Santo mates add an olfactory dimension to the mate experience.
  3. Cherry Wood : This wood is valued for its reddish color and smooth texture, offering a natural aesthetic and great durability.
  4. Walnut Wood : Walnut is a hard, dense wood that is often used for high-quality items. It provides an elegant and durable finish.
  5. Ebony Wood : Ebony is a very dense and dark wood, known for its durability and luxurious aesthetic. Ebony mats are rare and valuable.
  6. Olive Wood : Olive is a dense wood with unique and beautiful grain patterns. It is very durable and moisture resistant.

How to cure a wooden mate

Curing is an essential step in preparing your wooden mate for use. This process seals the wood, preventing cracks and mold, while improving the flavor of the mate.

Instructions for Cleaning:

  1. Initial Cleaning : Wash the mate with hot (not boiling) water to remove any manufacturing residue.
  2. Oil Application : Apply a grease, such as cooking oil (e.g. sunflower oil) or butter, to the inside of the mate. Make sure to coat the entire inside surface. You can also apply oil to the outside for added protection. This will not make the wood greasy.
  3. Rest : Let the gourd absorb the fat overnight with the oil applied. This process will help seal the wood and prevent cracking.
  4. Rinsing : In the morning, rinse the mate with hot water to remove excess oil.
  5. Repeat (optional) : Repeat the process once every six months to keep the wood hydrated and prevent cracking.

Regular Maintenance

To extend the life of your wooden mate, regular maintenance is necessary. Here are some simple tips:

  1. Cleaning : After each use, rinse the mate with warm water. Avoid using soap, as it can impregnate the wood and alter the taste of the mate.
  2. Drying : Dry the mate thoroughly after each use. Place it in a well-ventilated area, upside down, to allow air to circulate and prevent mold.

By following these steps, your wooden mate will give you many years of enjoyment. For more detailed information on the different types of mates and their care, check out our other blog posts.
