Why Water Should Never Go Above the Ferrule of Your Gourd

by Gustavo Calderon on Oct 28, 2024
Pourquoi l'eau ne doit jamais dépasser la virole de votre calebasse

Why should water never exceed the ferrule of your gourd?

The gourd is a decorative and practical element for tasting mate, allowing a more generous serving of yerba. However, it is important to respect certain rules of use to avoid problems such as leaks. One of the golden rules is: never let the water exceed the ferrule , the metal part located at the top of the gourd.

What is the ferrule and why is it important?

The ferrule, that metal piece around the top edge of the gourd, is there to give it a nice finish and strengthen its structure. It also helps hold more dry yerba mate , since this part can go all the way to the edge of the gourd. However, water should never reach this area because it is often stuck with silicone, and improper handling can cause leaks or peeling.

Why should water not touch the ferrule?

Here are the main reasons why it is essential to keep water below the ferrule:

  1. Risk of detachment : The ferrule is often fixed with silicone. If water comes into contact with this part repeatedly, it can weaken the glue, and the ferrule may come off.

  2. Gourd Expansion : Since the gourd is made from a natural gourd, it can shrink over time. If exposed to heat or left unused for too long, the organic material can shrink while the ferrule remains in place, causing delamination.

  3. Excessive Liquid Absorption : The gourd, being naturally porous, acts like a sponge and absorbs some of the liquid you pour into it. Sometimes, it can absorb so much liquid that it swells. This process can put pressure on the ferrule and cause it to detach. If this happens after you purchase your gourd from my store, contact me and I will send you a return label so I can fix the problem. It can happen, and I am here to help you fix it.

Common Causes of Ferrule Delamination

  1. Excessive Heat Exposure : If the gourd is frequently exposed to excessively hot water or high temperatures, it can cause the gourd to contract and put pressure on the ferrule.

  2. Gourd left too long without use : When left unused for a long time, the gourd may shrink slightly. If the ferrule does not follow this contraction, it may come off.

  3. Filling above the ferrule : If you fill the gourd with hot water to the brim or above, you expose the ferrule to moisture and heat, which can weaken the glue and cause leaks.

How to avoid these problems?

The golden rule is simple: never fill your gourd above the ferrule . The water should remain in the part below, where the dry yerba mate can reach the edge of the gourd. This simple precaution will avoid any risk of detachment and will extend the life of your gourd.

What to do if your ferrule comes off?

If despite all the precautions, your ferrule comes off or you notice leaks, don't panic ! If you bought your gourd in my shop, I offer a repair service. All you have to do is contact me, and I will take care of the repair. You will only have to pay the delivery costs, and your gourd will be like new!

Conclusion: enjoy a perfect mate by taking care of your gourd

Although not essential, the gourd adds a decorative and practical touch to your mate experience. Take care of it by following these simple tips, and you will be able to enjoy your favorite infusion without hassle for a long time.

If you have any questions or need help with your gourd, I am always available to help! 🍃
